Today was poorly attended, with just eleven skippers ready to do battle. A port to starboard course was chosen based on the NNE wind which was proven to be fine for all skippers with close racing all round. After our afternoon coffee break, the wind decided to change direction giving us a new NNW which meant we had to change to a starboard to port course. After finishing all the races and the scores results were finalized the top three skippers were announced, 1st place went to David Stewart followed by two of our own lads 2nd place Neil Thornton and 3rd place going to Roger Monks. Well done goes to all the skippers and congratulations to the three winners. A big thank you to Denise, Nicky and Mike for the hard work supplying tea/coffee and pie & peas at lunch time, and thank you to Simon for standing in for John Foster keeping scores. Photo’s of the event are to follow shortly |

MYA Workshop 1 at Rotherham
|
The
MYA Workshop 1 planned for Saturday 5th June at Rotherham, was
cancelled due to lack of support.
However, Rotherham Model Yacht Club organised an "Open Social Day"
instead on the same date.
Thoughts on the "Open Social Day"
Although the "MYA
Workshop 1" planned for Saturday 5th June, was
cancelled, due to a lack of support from the experts, the
"Open Social Day" with training, given by Damian
Ackroyd replaced it, and turned out to be a great success.
The weather was kind to us, Sunny periods, with the
temperature round about 25° wind
2-8mph. Twenty-five members attended, five of whom
were visitors.
The day started at 10.00am, with boats lined up so that
Damian could go through them, pointing out how they should
be set up in current wind conditions.
We were then instructed to re-set our boats based on his
initial words, he then went through each boat with its
owner, with others looking on, discussing these settings and
any changes required. This took us up to lunch
time when we enjoyed some good cooking by the ladies of the
club.
After lunch we compared boats on the water in pairs, to
assess how well they were set up and being sailed by
individuals, advice being given as we went along. Then we
practiced starting methods, of which there are many, what do
they say "out of confusion comes some order eventually",
however this part of the day was very helpful.
I think everyone who attended felt that Damian had explained
things very well and that they had all learnt something,
both beginners and the more experienced sailors as well.

THORNWICK
BAY MODEL WEEK
Well done Neil - Winning his first open meeting with his own design IOM Sixteen skippers took part in the annual Thornwick Bay Modelling Week event this year with members from Bridlington, Rotherham & Leeds taking part. The weather could not have been better, a gentle South South West breeze blowing for most of the day gave our Captain Steve chance to map out an interesting course covering most of the lake. Brian Hartley seemed to be on good form early on, winning three of the first five races, and finished up winning the last three. Neil Thornton and Brian "Jammy" Hartley had some very interesting races, Neil ending up with five wins. Whilst I was entering the scores on my laptop, it was anybody's guess who would come out on top. The customary tea breaks were observed at regular intervals, which has become one of the things to expect when racing at Bridlington, plus the usual pie peas & gravy were served up for lunch by Ann & Nicki, our ladies in the galley. A clear blue sky, a glassy calm and a thin layer of ice covering half the intended sailing area greeted the five visitors and five home club members to the re-run of our open meeting. Initially then, racing was impossible, so John Tushingham entertained us with a demonstration of his RG65 in a small area of ice-free water. However by around 11o’clock a gentle zephyr sprang up from the south-east so a narrow triangular course was set carefully avoiding the “ice-bergs”. The breeze, such as it was, came and went during the day so that in some races every leg of the course had a beat in it, but by some judicious course shortening we managed to complete twelve races. John Tushingham with his Robot gave us an object lesson in how to sail in ghosting conditions and easily won the event with ten races giving him a perfect score of ten points. Roy Stevens ( Pekanto ) was second and Brian Quinn (Widget ) was third. Despite the frustrating conditions everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and all the competitors deserve credit for the very sportsmanlike manner in which the event was sailed. 18 skippers attended for a good days racing at Weecher Reservoir, the wind was changeable but with the odd course change we managed 12 races. John Tushingham of the home club showed everyone the way winning 10 of the 12 races with his new Robot, closely followed by MYA Vice chairman, Tony Edwards, also sailing a Robot into second place. Unfortunately there was one early retirement due to a rudder servo failure which proved too difficult to replace on the day.
Pie & Peas
provided by the ladies of the club proved a worthy snack at
lunchtime for those requiring sustenance. |

The
eight skippers faced very testing conditions with very little wind all day, the first race took 40 minutes for two triangles, from then on we shortened the course to one triangle and a beat. Even in these testing conditions we managed 10 races that all skippers competed in very high spirits. John Tushingham returned to West Riding for the first time in many years and lead the fleet home convincingly although the others were never that far behind with most of the skippers having lead at some point throughout the day. West Riding are one of the newest clubs to take to the IOM in the district and from their enthusiasm that the skippers have shown through the past few months and the plans they have for the future, I am sure the class will be well supported within the club. Many thanks to all. Report by Damian Ackroyd |

Only five skippers took part in the second round of the winter series, and all were members of the host club. The rather low turnout, which was a bit disappointing as no members from other clubs attended, was possibly due to the change of date at short notice, and the uncertainty of the situation on the roads due to the earlier flooding in the area. Those that did sail, enjoyed a good days racing, with 12 races and 2 discards to count.
Rob Barrow was the skipper of the day scoring 12 points overall, 14 points clear of Adrian Stanton in second place.
